Why the choice of major is so important

THE "MAJOR" DECISION

There are many different types of majors on campus.  The goal is to help students determine their path early and carefully.  Many students decide later in their college career the subject they wish to follow and that is understandable, however it can a student less efficient.  Students should consult with an advisor about career and subject paths.

On average students are changing their major 4-6 times during their time at the university.  This causes students to be less efficient because they are taking classes or have taken classes that do not apply to one single major. This means more money paid, and time wasted.  Those that select their major later and are fulfilling requirements for "Generals" are also less efficient.  These students are possibly taking too many classes that do not pertain to any structured curriculum.  The objective is to help students select there major early and consult with their advisors annually.

How does changing majors multiple times or selecting a major later make students less efficient?
